Feb 18, 2008 (newstodate): To cope with dynamically increasing demands for air travel, Turkey is in the process of reopening a number of decommisioned airport.
Six airport were closed down in 2006, but are now re-entering operational status.
Among these, Sinop Airport near the Black Sea is already being reactivated and will start operating in the near future.
Other regional airports to be re-developed include Zonguldak Airport by the Black Sea coast and the airports at Balikesir in the Marmara Region, Tokat at the Black Sea region of Anatolia, Sivas in Eastern Anatolya, and Usak in the inner Aegean Region of Turkey.
Air traffic movements of all Turkish airports will come under the unified control of Ankara ATC Center, due to become fully operational later in 2008.
By re-activating the country's "dormant" airports, Turkey expects to be able to cope with the doubling of air transportation over the last four years without having to invest in costly construction of new airports.
