Feb 29, 2008 (newstodate): Plans are on the table for a modernisation of Smolensk South Airport, near Smolensk in Western Russia.
A project to be completed during 2009-2011 has been presented, including lengthening of the airport's current 1,600 m concrete runway, implementation of new navaids systems, and a passenger terminal.
The government of Moscow ha pledged to shoulder 75 percent of the investments in the modernisation of Smolensk South Airport, a former AFB, as part of a plan to support construction and modernisation of airports in the region.
