Feb 21, 2008 (newstodate): The proximity of Vienna Airport is not the only explanation behind Bratislava's dwindling cargo volumes in 2007.
-The main reason for the decline is the fact that the EU has restricted landings of several types of heavy aircraft in EU airports, says Zora Kalouskova, Bratislava Airport spokesperson.
-In our case, the IL-76 was the main freighter used for charter cargo flights at Bratislava Airport. As IL-76 is one of those banned aircraft, our operators did not manage to react flexibly in 2007, and that is why the cargo results dropped so dramatically, she says.
-In 2008 the airport is launching a new cooperation with a major cargo carrier, initially generating one daily flight. Therefore we believe this years result should improve again, says Ms Kalouskova.
Totalling some 5,000 tonnes in 2006, cargo volumes dropped to a mere 1,969 tonnes in 2007, excluding trucked cargo, while mail volumes, 104 tonnes in 2007, were up on the 71 tonnes in 2006
