Feb 25, 2008 (newstodate): Based on airline recommendations, Eurocontrol will now seek to expand the implementation of ADS-B at a wide range of European airports.
Eurocontrol will thus approach the aviation authorities in countries already actively participating in ADS-B trials, such as , France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
Also to be targeted are airports in Norway, Moldova, Romania, Spain and the Ukraine, where no surveillance-based air traffic control service is available today and where it would be too difficult or too expensive to introduce radar.
ADS-B implementation would allow controllers to vector aircraft for greater safety, as well as reducing holding times at both approach and departure, thus increasing capacity and efficiency.
In all some 70 airports have been identified for potential ADS-B implementation.
