Dec 17, 2008 (newstodate): Finland's disputed claim to be the homeland of Santa Claus is generating much extra air traffic in December.
At peak times, 47 aircraft per day, or a total of about 1,000 flights, are plying the airspace between UK destinations and Rovaniemi, Finland, but from this year "green" routes have been assigned by Norway's Avinor when they fly through Norwegian airspace.
Earlier most of the British Santa Claus flights to Finland had to fly point-to-point routes through Danish airspace.
International cooperation by Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and the UK has now provided shorter routes to Finland through Norwegian airspace.
