Dec 3, 2008 (newstodate): The crisis in Russia's airline industry is also hitting hard at Kaliningrad's KD Avia.
Unable to repay its debts, KD Avia has applied for state help, and this will require a separation of KD Avia's airline and airport business.
While the state may then help KD Avia to stay afoot, Kaliningrad Khrabrovo Airport will reportedly be sold, and Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport is named as a possible buyer.
KD Avia has benefited from its airport ownership through high handling charges levied on other airlines, including Aeroflot that will stand to gain from a sale to Sheremetyevo.
KD Avia operates a fleet of 19 Boeing 737-300 aircraft, and earlier this year the carrier signed a commitment with Airbus to receive 25 Airbus A319 aircraft.
Aiming at establishing Kaliningrad as hub for traffic between Europe and Russia, KD Avia serves a total of 27 destinations in 10 countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Israel, Spain, the Czech Republic and the Ukraine.
