Nov 5, 2008 (newstodate): A runway construction project has been completed at Magadan Sokol Airport, in Russia's northernmost region.
The 3,452m runway has long been in such a bad shape as to seasonally prohibit its use by Russian carriers since 2006.
Magadan Airport, one of Russia's 52 airports of strategic importance, is seeking a role as a transit and re-fuelling stop on routes between Asia and Europe, and is now actively in the market for foreign investments in its infrastructure.
With the renovated runway, the airport can handle aircraft of types Boeing 757, Boeing 767, Airbus A320 Family, Il-96, TU-204, and TU-214.
