Nov 18, 2008 (newstodate): Rosavia will be the name of Russia's new mega-airline to compete with Aeroflot for a dominant position.
Formerly known as Russian Airlines, the new conglomerate, formed around Moscow City government's Atlant-Soyuz after the recent crisis in Russia's airline industry and the demise of AiRUnion, will comprise up to 11 airlines including Atlant Soyuz, Rossiya, Kavminvodyavia, Orenburg Airlines, Saratov Airlines, Sakhalin Airways, Vladivostok Airlines, Dalavia, KrasAir, Domodedovo Airlines and Samara.
The formation of Rosavia will take Russia's civil aviation a long step towards the much-needed consolidation after a prolonged period, since the break-down of the Soviet Union, marked by a multitude of under-financed and ill-equipped small market players.
