Nov 4, 2008 (newstodate): Prospects are reportedly good for China and Taiwan to agree on the opening of more direct cross-strait flights and cargo services.
An agreement will expectedly be signed in Taipei today, taking effect 40 days later.
Only 36 weekly flights are currently permitted, while the new agreement will lift the limit to up to 108 weekly flights, while the number of destinations in China will increase from five to 21.
Also on the table is allowance for direct freighter services between Taipei and Kaohsiung in Taiwan, and Shanghai and Guangzhou in China.
The new agreement will also allow the opening of direct flight routes rather than the twists and turns now required to fullfil the obligation to enter and leave through Hong Kong airspace.
