Nov 25, 2008 (newstodate): Together with a group of companies, SITA subsidiary CHAMP Cargosystems has developed a new systsem, SmartSec to meet new stringent US cargo security demands.
At least 70 percent of air cargo is shipped in passenger flights, but less than 10 percent of that cargo is security checked a potentially dangerous flaw in the fight against terrorist attack, contraband and smuggling.
To counter the perceived threat, the US Government wants 100 percent security screening of air freight by 2010, with 50 percent screened by next year already .
Unless a workable alternative can be found, preferably community-driven, the US government will press ahead with the 2010 deadline, raising questions about the availability of sufficient screening equipment.
Through intelligent threat assessment, using intelligence from a variety of sources to build cargo profiles as early in the cycle as possible, SmartSec claims to provide the highest level of screening focused on the cargo assessed as highest risk.
