Oct 21, 2008 (newstodate): In 2009, Russia's S7 Airlines will scrap all remaining Soviet-built aircraft in its fleet.
Following this decision, the carrier will scrap a total of 35 aircraft including TU-154 and IL-86.
The decision is prompted by high fuel and maintenance costs as well as declining passenger loads, and after the redjustment the carrier expects to see a significant increase in cost-efficiency and profitability even at lower passenger load factors.
After the disposal of the ageing Russian aircraft, S7 will operate a total of 36 western-built Boeing and Airbus aircraft, planned to increase to 57 by the end of next year.
In the carrier's curent order book are seven Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, the first of which is slated for delivery by 2014.
