Oct 8, 2008 (newstodate): After much delay, rehabilitation of the runway of Russia's Voronezh International Airport will start in October, 2008.
The 2,300 m runway will be upgraded with a new lighting system, and a new tender will be opened in 2009 for extension by 300 m to 2,600 m, as well as the renovation of the airport terminal.
The runway rehabiltation was already planned for 2007, but work was suspended as the airport operator, Voronezh Avia, proved unable to secure the financing due to lack of assets to back the loan applied for.
The government had reserved funds for the reconstruction of the airport, but the release of these funds requires co-financing by the airport operator, which has now been secured.
