Oct 22, 2008 (newstodate): Plans for the successor to Russia's defunct airline alliance, AiRUnion, are maturing.
The new conglomerate, with the working title Russian Airlines are to be built around the Moscow city government-owned Atlant-Soyuz and comprise some 10 current airlines including Rossiya, Kavminvodyavia, Orenburg Airlines, Saratov Airlines, Vladivostok Avia, Sakhalin Airlines, Dalavia, Krasair, Samara Airlines, and Domodedovo Airlines.
Ownership will be split between Russian Technologies and the government of Moscow City.
Incidentally, the current financial crisis will probably be helpful in the process as the debt burdens that killed the airlines of AiRUnion have been significantly reduced in value through the crisis, easing the take-over by the new owners.
The significant consolidation in Russia's civil aviation will produce the single largest competitor to Aeroflot.
