Oct 3, 2008 (newstodate): In 2007, Norway's export by air of fresh salmon to the global marketplace reached 60,000 tonnes, and there are still potentials for growth and new markets.
-Japan remained by far our single largest market with 18,750 tonnes of airfreight in 2007, but this market is satuated, and we expect growth to come in new markets like India and maybe the Far Eastern parts of Russia, says Tom E Mikkelsen, Marine Harvest Norway project director.
-China is of course a huge and emerging market with 5,193 tonnes in 2007, increasing 50 percent, Hong Kong is a large market, too, taking 9,772 tonnes and rising 15 percent, while Taiwan with 3,768 tonnes more than doubled volumes in 2007.
-Norway's exporters use an array of airlines to lift these volumes, and first among these with some 40 percent of the total tonnage is Korean Air Cargo that has proved a reliable provider offering a stable service without any problems to the forwarders.
-Serving the shippers are four Norwegian specialised forwarders, with DHL Quality Cargo topping the list with some 40 percent, followed by Schenker with 13 percent, Kuehne + Nagel and Air Cargo Logistics.
In Norway, 40 percent of the combined airfreight turnover by the country's 38 forwarders comes from the salmon exports that also constitute 60 percent of the total export air cargo tonnages.
