Oct 29, 2008 (newstodate): Finnair Technical Services has started freighter conversion work on the first of two ex-Finnair MD-11, sold to Aeroflot Cargo.
This marks the start of phasing-out of the MD-11 from Finnair's long-haul fleet, now comprising 11 aircraft, nine of which will be returned to the leasing company as their leasing periods expire.
The company has ordered a total of eight Airbus A330-300 aircraft, in addition to two options, to replace the MD-11.
Five of the Airbus A330 aircraft will be delivered to Finnair in 2009 and the remainder at the beginning of 2010, at which time the last Boeing MD-11 will be withdrawn from use.
Finnair already operates five Airbus A340 aircraft on its long-haul route network focusing on Asian routes.
