Oct 20, 2008 (newstodate): As the first aiprort in Bulgaria, Sofia Airport has been lifted to Cat IIIA status, allowing for improved bad weather operational capability.
The airport's 3,600 m runway can now allow traffic under conditions of visibility down to 200 meters, compared to the previous limit at 500 m under CAT I conditions.
With the new category the airport will significantly improve its up-time record that has invariably been severely hampered by recurrent periods of mists during winter seasons.
