Jan 23, 2008 (newstodate): Mongolia is planning to construct a new airport at Ulan Bator, slated for inauguration by 2015.
The site for new airport will be 54 km from city center, and the Japanese government has pledged to provide a 40-year USD270 mio loan to fund the construction work.
Work will start in 2011 and also comprise a new highway to connect airport and city center.
The current capital airport is Ulan Bator is served by the Chinggis Khaan International Airport with a 3,100 m runway and another 2,000 m runway covered with grass.
The existing airport is operationally restricted by its location marked by unfavorable climatic conditions, strong winds and mountainous surroundings, which makes a full implementation of ICAO standards difficult.
