Jan 18, 2008 (newstodate): Chinese cargo charter loads for the Russian market play a crucial role in the Baltic airports, used for safe transfer procedures.
In 2007 Estonia's Tallinn Airport saw charter volumes up from 4,877 tonnes in 2006 to 17,352, while Latvia's Riga Airport's charter loads fell from 5,970 tonnes in 2006 to 970 in 2007, and Lithuania's Vilnius Airport saw no cargo charter volumes at all.
With some 58 percent of Lithuania's total air cargo volumes, Kaunas Airport generated 6,800 tonnes of cargo in 2007, almost unchanged against 2006, and also without Chinese exports for the Russian market.
-We have experienced problems with the customs procedures around the Chinese transit volumes for Russia, primarily consisting of textiles and clothings, and this has kept Chinese cargo charters away from Lithuania and Kaunas Airport, says Arijandas Sliupas, Kaunas Airport general director.
-The problems arise from strict control on brands as there have been many cases of counterfeit productions.
-We expect the Lithuanian customs procedures to be in place by the end of January, or early February, and we expect then to see this traffic returning to Lithuania again, says Mr Sliupas.
