Jan 11, 2008 (newstodate): Being already pressed by modern maritime cargo services, the air cargo industry may face yet another long-haul competitor - cargo trains between China and Europe.
A new rail cargo service is currently being tested on the route from Beijing to Hamburg.
The train will travel through China, Mongolia, Russia, Belarus, and Poland on its way to Germany.
Rail cargo from China to Europe usually takes 40 days, which will be reduced to 20 days under the new concept that builds on inter-state participation to smoothen customs procedures and other factors impeding a seamless flow.
Depending on solutions to these issues, scheduled China-Europe rail cargo services are envisaged to be launched within one year.
