Jan 7, 2008 (newstodate): The Baltic air cargo markets present a rather complex picture, blurred by frequent changes in China-Russia charter traffic and the impact from road feeder services.
-Trucking is increasing fast across Europe and in the case of the Baltics there is no way telling by how much as there are no statistics at all, says Toms Anderssons, airBaltic Head of Cargo.
-As far as export from RIX is concerned, it is in decline since August as also confirmed by the forwarders. airBaltic's export cargo volumes are, however, on the rise driven by transit volumes.
-Charter operations with Chinese goods destined for the Russian market are constantly switched between Riga and Tallinn, and they are basically behind the obvious decline in the cargo volumes in 2007 at Latvia's Riga Airport as well as the equally significant increase in Tallinn's volumes also in 2007.
-I personally do not account for this traffic when trying to establish airBaltic's market share, or to compare the Baltic airports.
-Exlcuding the volumes on charter operations, Tallinn generated 4,414, Riga 7,214, and Vilnius Airport 5,780 tonnes in 2007, says Mr Anderssons.
