Sep 10, 2007 (newstodate): Kazakhstan is keen to upgrade its airport infrastructure.
-There are currently about 20 airports in Kazakhstan, and the government has decided on a plan to reconstruct two airports per year, says Azat Bekturov, Kazakhstan vice-minister of transport and communications.
-Not all of these airports are state-owned. Many are privately owned, or owned by municipalities or provinces. We are, however, keen to see these airport reconstruct and modernise, irrespective of ownership.
-One case is Oral Ak Zhol Airport that is not owned by the state. This airport is in a bad shape, and we have asked them to redevelop. So far, their plans are for construction of a new runway in 2009, however, which is in my view far too late.
-We are therefore urging them to speed up the process, and if they do not comply the state will be forced to take it over, says Mr Bekturov.
