About 70 percent of all Kazakh air cargo and 60 percent of all passengers pass via Almaty Airport, only 350 km from the border to China.
In 2006 the airport's cargo traffic increased by 56 percent to some 54,000 tonnes, and expectations are that the cargo volumes will grow a further 70-80 percent in 2007.
Among the airport's cargo carriers are Cargolux, China Eastern Airlines, El Al, FedEx, KLM, Lufthansa Cargo, MK Airlines, Turkish Airlines Cargo, Polar Air Cargo, Antonov Airlines, Polet and Volga-Dnepr.
