Aug 23, 2007 (newstodate): Currently competing for traffic, Estonia's Estonian Air and Latvia's airBaltic may face a common future.
According to an interview in the German paper Handelsblatt, SAS' CEO says Estonian Air and airBaltic may be merged into one company after SAS has obtained a majority in each carrier.
SAS currently owns 49 percent of Estonian Air, and 47.2 percent of airBaltic.
Pending political accept by the Estonian and LAtvian governments, SAS may pursue the issue after having divested itself of its 20 percent stake in Btitish Midland, currently estimated to be worth some 275 mio euro.
The only remaining Baltic national airline without SAS part-ownership remains Lithuanian Airlines that was privatised in 2005.
