May 16, 2007 (newstodate): Financial problems are threathening the planned expansion and modernisation of Voronezh Airport, in southwestern Russia.
The reconstruction of the runway, part of the program, has come to a stand-still as the airport operator, Voronezh Avia has been unable to secure the financing due to lack of assets to back the loan applied for.
The airline's assets comprise a fleet of five Tu-134 and three 3 An-24 aircraft, all of which are however operated by other airlines on lease contracts.
The government has reserved funds for the reconstruction of the airport, but the release of these funds requires co-financing by the airport operator.
