May 17, 2007 (newstodate): The new Gelendzhik Airport, in Southwest Russia, currently under construction will ease the pressure on the airports of Sochi, Anapa and Krasnodar.
Gelendzhik Airport will have one 3,100 m runway with approach from the Black Sea, and besides passsenger traffic cargo operations are envisaged as well.
The new airport will replace the existing WW II military airfield that today accepts only small aircraft.
Work started in 2006, and the airport will expectedly start operations from later this year.
