May 8, 2007 (newstodate): Cargo carried by Finnair rose 0.5 percent in January-March compared to the same period a year ago reaching 21,659 tonnes, the airline said in its quarterly report. Freight on scheduled traffic was 4.9 percent higher and cargo carried in Asian traffic showed a very strong 19.7 percent gain. Major declines were recorded for North America down 10.8 percent where leased cargo capacity has been reduced and Europe with 13.2 percent fall in traffic.
The company added that scheduled cargo traffic unit revenues declined
4.6 percent during the period reflecting overcapacity in the Nordic market. However the expanding Indian market where strong cargo demand is reported is seen as a positive factor and the new five times a week service starting to Mumbai this June " will serve this demand well", said president and CEO Jukka Hienonen. Unit revenues per CTK were down 4.9 percent. Passenger traffic was up 9.3 percent with the load factor rising 1.2 percentage points to 75.8 percent
"We are making new openings in Asia and Europe .... Slots are being awarded at many busy Asian airports and we want to ensure that Finnair's colours are seen.. at those destinations," he added. He stressed that the carrier is concentrating on traffic between Asia and Europe, and the network is being revised so that all flights are direct with no intermediate stops.
There will be daily services to Bangkok, Delhi, Hong Kong, Osaka, Beijing and Shanghai as well as flights to Guangzhou and Nagoya.
