Apr 13, 2007 (newstodate): The Swedish carrier Viking Airlines is preparing to launch a new airlink between the UK and Iraq.
Starting in May, the carrier will operate a once-weekly flight from London Stansted to Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan, via its main aircraft base at Athens.
The first western carrier to offer scheduled service from Europe to Kurdistan from December, 2005, Viking Airlines already operates a once- weekly flight from Stockholm to Erbil as well as a second weekly flight from Stockholm to Erbil via Copenhagen.
From June, the carrier will also start a weekly flight between Stockholm and Beirut, Lebanon.
-We would be happy to fly airfreight to Iraq as well as there is definitely a market for it, although it is probably highly imbalanced. But with fully-booked passenger flights there is little belly left for cargo, says Mike Carlsson, Viking Airlines managing director.
