Apr 11, 2007 (newstodate): The EU Commission has now approved Polish state aid to the modernisation of Lodz airport.
The airport has designed a range of projects to upgrade its infrastructure, including expanding an existing terminal and building a new one.
Lodz Airport is a mainly state-owned small regional airport with 35,460 passengers in 2005, rising to 216,861 in 2006.
The Polish Airports State Enterprise plans to invest more than 200 million zloty in 2007 to modernize and expand Poland's airports, including the country's regional airports.
Estimates indicate that the capacity of Poland's air terminals should increase to accommodate about 40 million passengers annually by 2009, and dedicated cargo airports will also by needed.
Among the options for a new cargo-dedicated airport is Radom-Sadkow, and the regional authorities will seek EU funding for the project.
