In 2002 the number of carriers was 252, and this had decreased to 182 by the beginning of this year.
Of the 70 airlines that went out of business, 50 percent were grounded due to lack of compliance with aviation safety regulations, while the remaining 50 percent fell out due to lack of financial means.
95 percent of Russia's domestic air services are now provided by only 30 airlines, sources say.
