Apr 10, 2007 (newstodate): Work is progressing to transform a number of Bulgarian air force bases into commercial airports.
Earlier this year, the ministers of defence and transport decided that the air force bases at Pavnets, Dobrich, Uzundzhovo, Gorna Oriahovitsa, Gabrovnisa and Stara Zagora will be decommisssioned and transformed into civilian airports.
In focus now is the military airport at Plovdiv where the runway will be turned over to the transport ministry. Work is also progressing on assessing the investments needed to open the airport on a commercial basis, which may require a new terminal and a refurbishment of the infrastructure.
