Apr 18, 2007 (newstodate): Hamburg Airport is the main passenger airport in northern Germany, but the bulk of the cargo shipments generated in the region by-passes the airport.
A study shows that the north German Schleswig-Holstein generated a total of 45,000 tonnes of airfreight in 2003, expected to increase by 50 percent in 2015 to some 65,000 tonnes.
In 2003, only one-third of this volume was actually handled by Hamburg Airport, the remaining two-thirds being trucked instead to German cargo hubs, primarily Frankfurt and Bonn/Cologne.
Also in 2005, only some 24,000 out of 75,000 tonnes of air cargo was flown from or into Hamburg Airport, the remaining entering or departing by road feeder services.
In conclusion, only one-third of the air cargo volumes destined for or generated by Hamburg Airport's immediate catchment area is actually handled by the airport - and of this volume, only one-third flies into or out from Hamburg Airport.
In 2006 Hamburg Airport handled a total of 78,900 tonnes of air cargo.
