Apr 4, 2007 (newstodate): Iraqi Kurdistan's main airport, Erbil Hawler Airport is amidst a comprehensive expansion and modernisation process.
Current construction works comprise the building of a new runway, apron areas and terminals to be completed by the end of this year, and to become operational from 2008.
The airport has also signed a three-year contract with the Swedish consultancy company Swedavia to upgrade Erbil to full ICAO standards.
The airport was originally an Iraqi military aiport but became fully operational as a commercial airport on July 7, 2007, after an initial investment of some 250 mio USD.
Included in the current plans is the construction of a new cargo terminal.
In 2006 the airport generated 11,000 tonnes of airfreight by commercial airlines and cargo carriers including DHL, FedEx, SkyLink, Starlight, Seepan, Aramex, and World Wide Express.
