Apr 13, 2007 (newstodate): Alitalia Cargo is performing nicely in Scandinavia, says its cargo GSA, ProActive Airline Services.
-Alitalia Cargo still has to fight against a taunted image in the market, but to our experience it is really undeserved, says Christina Bennetezen, ProActive Airline Services, Alitalia's GSA in Scandinavia since August 2006.
-We have a steady flow of bookings, primarily for ships spares destined for Italy's main harbours at Genova, Palermo and Trieste that are not served by many other carriers. But there is also a significant traffic to Malta that primarily consists of pharmaceuticals.
-Some 90 percent of our Scandinavian shipments are destined for Italian destinations, capitalising on the carrier's extensive domestic network.
-Alitalia operates flights to Copenhagen and Stockholm with MD-80 aircraft that are limited in cargo space and capacity. Trucking from Scandinavia to Alitalia's hubs in Milan and Rome is relatily little used as they transfer via Amsterdam from where capacity is most often insufficient to secure the onward journey.
-In short, Alitalia Cargo is not a main carrier in the Scandinavian market - but an important and attractive niche carrier with a focus on Italy, says Ms Bennetzen.
