Mar 22, 2007 (newstodate): Ukraine's airport infrastructure is in dire needs for modernisation and reconstruction, according to a recent conference at the Ukrainean vice-premier's office.
The country currently has 34 airports, eight of which are "strategic airports" including Borispol, Donets, Odessa, Lvov, Simferopol, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, and Kiev Zhulyany International airport.
To bring the airport infrastructure in line with international standards allowing them to handle today's larger aircraft, "practically everyone of them" will need renovation or construction of new runways including facilities and equipment, new taxiways and aircraft parking stands, the conference concluded.
Also new or reconstructed passenger terminals and cargo centres will be needed.
A working group will now be set up to evaluate the situation and assess each airport's condition.
