Mar 19, 2007 (newstodate): Russia's Ministry of Transportation is considering a new approach to the development and management of the country's airports infrastructure.
The ministry proposes that 60 out of 350 airports will remain under federal supervision, while the remainder will be transferred to regional control and management.
If regional authorities are unable to undertake this reponsibility, the airports may next be privatised and sold to private investor groups.
The Russian authorities are also amidst a thorough assesment of the the airport as to air and flight safety, and so far a batch of 12 airports have been closed down due to lack of licences or non-conformance with ICAO and other standards.
