Mar 21, 2007 (newstodate): Plans are maturing for the re-opening of Keflavik Airport's third runway, decommissioned some 10 years ago.
-The Icelandic government has in principle decided on this issue, and will provide the fundings for the project, says Fridthor Eydal, Keflavik Airport PR officer.
-The runway served as a bad-weather back-up for Reykjavik Airport, and runs in parallel to the airport's other two 10,000 ft runways. But it was seldom in use and was therefore decommissioned.
-We have not yet been informed of concrete details in the government's plans for funding, so we keep the issue on hold till this information has been transmitted. But reopening the runway will obviously require a thorough upgrading of the infrastructure including runway lighting and navaids, says Mr Eydal.
