Mar 2, 2007 (newstodate): One more freighter operator - Jade Cargo starting operations at Stockholm Arlanda from next week - means even harder competition, and over-supply of Asian-bound capacity, which has a deep impact on rates and yields in the Scandinavian markets.
-It is always a challenge to Lufthansa Cargo when new operators throw additional capacity into our markets in the form of direct flights to Asia, says Kay Wichmann, Lufthansa Cargo director Nordic and Baltic countries.
-So far nothing has changed for us. A new competitor has announced his arrival and we will now observe the situation to see how it affects the market.
-But looking at the statistics in the Scandinavian scene we cannot see a basis for a growth in freighter services to Asia, and we are, I think, close to a situation of over-capacity, which can only mean further drops in rates and depressed yields for all, says Mr Wichmann.
During the last few months, Stockholm Arlanda has seen Korean Air Cargo, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines Cargo and Jade Cargo Airlines as new operators, all with Boeing 747-400 freighter capacity.
