Mar 8, 2007 (newstodate): Sweden's Norrkoping Airport won a major victory on March 6 when EU approved its BIP status.
With this crucial issue solved, the airport expects to see an imminent resumption of Icelandair's monthly freighter service carrying Icelandic horses for the Swedish and Norwegian market, a traffic with a volume of some 800 horses annually.
The traffic was halted in 2005 as the airport did not meet the BIP criteria.
Sweden's Stockholm Arlanda and Gothenburg Landvetter airports are also certified BIPs, but here capacity is limited for handling horses.
So much of the traffic has instead been directed to Denmark's Billund Airport that may now have to let go parts of the lucrative business.
