Feb 5, 2007 (newstodate): A major airport project will start at Helmand, Afghanistan.
The airport was badly damaged during the fight against the invasion by the Soviet Union, but work will now start on reconstructing the runway and other primary infrastructure allowing the airport to re-open to civilian traffic.
The British-led provincial reconstruction team has secured the financing of the USD 70,000 project.
When the runway construction has been been completed, Ariana plans to re-open flights between Helmand and Kabul.
Of Afghanistan's 40 airports, only 17 are now in use, sources say.
