SALISDec 20, 2007 (newstodate): Cargo volumes at Germany's Leipzig/Halle Airport have grown some 200 percent in 2007 to nearly 100,000 tonnes, boosted by the SALIS operations.
The airport is the home base of Ruslan SALIS
GmbH, a joint venture between Volga-Dnepr
Group and ADB Antonov created in 2006 to
supply AN-124-100 freighter aircraft to NATO
to satisfy the requirements of its Strategic
Airlift Interim Solution, SALIS, project.
Under the terms of the initial three year
contract, which includes the option for an
extension to 2012, Ruslan SALIS provides
up to six AN-124 aircraft to NATO to support
peacekeeping and security programs around
the world.
Two of the 120 tonnes capacity, outsize and heavyweight cargo aircraft are now based permanently in Leipzig.
Also contributing the the airport's strong growth in cargo are DHL's new freighter hub and Lufthansa Cargo's operations.
