Dec 7, 2007 (newstodate): Armenia plans to reinstate operations at Stepanapart Airport in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region, under de-facto Armenian control since the war with Azerbaijan in the 90ies.
The airport has been inoperative for 20 years, but plans are to reopen it in 2008 with flights from Yerevan, Armenia.
The airport can currently receive only helicopters, but plans are to install phased-out navigational equipment from Armenia's Gyumri Airport that is now being modernised, allowing it to receive fixed-wing traffic as well.
After reopening in the autumn of 2008 the airport will be restricted to traffic between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabagh as introduction of international traffic would require cooperation with Azerbaijan that still claims the region.
