Nov 26, 2007 (newstodate): Norwegian airport Lakselv Airport Banak, close to the Polar circle, is working hard to become a potential venue for export by air of Norwegian fish products.
The project has been on the table for a few years already, but plans are now backed by Norwegian exporters in the region, and work is now in progress to find partners for cooperation.
High on the agenda is the building of a new cargo terminal at the airport but the operation migh start out with staff working with palletisation in cool containers pending the opening of a terminal.
Plans envisage a daily flight from Banak Airport to destinations in the Far East and Japan.
The region's fish producers now rely on trucking of their products on long routes to Oslo or airports in Europe, requiring up to three days on the road.
With the planned cargo service from Banak, fish producers might truck shipments during the night for next-day uplift.
