Nov 8, 2007 (newstodate): Russia is expected to allow commercial air traffic over Novaja Zemja and the Barents Sea.
The proposed new Arctic routes are even more northerly than the Arctica routes already opened for commercial traffic, and the new routes will facilitate shorter flying times on routes between Asia and North America, and Northern Asia and Europe.
The routes would thus enable carriers to establish new city-pairs with twin-engine longhaul aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330.
The area over Novaja Zemja and the Barents Sea was earlier closed to commercial air traffic due to its military sensitivity and Russian nuclear tests.
