Nov 19, 2007 (newstodate): The current conflict between Germany and Russia over Lufthansa Cargo's flights through Siberian airspace to and from Astana, Kazakhstan, could prove a renewed chance for Kazakhstan's Almaty Airport.
Almaty lies far to the south in Kazakhstan, and the carrier's flights between Frankfurt and destinations in the Far East via Almaty would not require passage through the disputed Siberian airspace.
Until last year, Lufthansa Cargo used Almaty as its transit hub in Central Asia, but moved operations, excluding two weekly flights, to Astana after political pressure from Kazakhstan's authorities.
