Nov 8, 2007 (newstodate): The EU-Russia Aviation Summit, slated for November 16-17, has been postponed.
The official summit website marks the postponement without further comments, but is is widely seen as a result of the current crisis over flight permits for Lufthansa Cargo freighters through Russian airspace.
The flights were not included in the air services agreement between the two parties, but relied on a procedure of permits for the individual operation, taking Lufthansa Cargo freighters between Germany and China and Japan through its hub in Astana, Kazakhstan.
On October 27 Russia ceased issuing permits for the flights in a move seen to put pressure on Lufthansa Cargo to move its hub to Krasnoyarsk.
Russia has temporarily accepted to lift the ban till November 15, expecting Lufthansa Cargo to bend to its demands before the expiry of the grace period.
Another unsolved issue remains Russia's sustained missing signature to the earlier agreement on the timeframe to abolish the prohibitive en-route charges for flights by western airlines on the new arctic and polar airlanes from 2013.
