Oct 8, 2007 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Almaty Airport is keen to develop its transit cargo.
Before 2005, the airport generated a total of 21,979 tones of cargo, comprising only cargo imports and exports.
From 2005 transit cargo has increased the airport's cargo throughput significant, reaching 12,918 tonnes in 2005, corresponding to 33.7 percent of the annual total of 38,316 tonnes, and 17,606 tonnes in 2006, corresponding to 32.9 percent of the total of 52,540 tonnes.
The decline in percentage of the transit volumes reflects Lufthansa Cargo's decision in June 2006 to move the greater part of its cargo flights via Kazakhstan to Astana Airport.
Lufthansa Cargo now operates up to six daily freighter flights through Astana, and eight weekly flights through Almaty.
But Almaty is still upbeat about its future role as a technical fuel stop or transfer cargo hub for routes between Europe and the Far East.
Fedex started out with four movements, and now flies ten times weekly through Almaty, transloading shipments at the airport, and from July 24, 2007, UPS went from one to five weekly rotations through the airport.
El Al operates nine to 11 weekly flights to Almaty, and other operators include KLM Cargo, Turkish Airlines Cargo, China Eatern Airlines and Cargolux, in addition to a number of operators on an ad-hoc basis.
