Jan 25, 2007 (newstodate): Work has now started on construction of a new cargo terminal at Malmo Sturup Airport, in southern Sweden.
The 4,700 sq m terminal is expected to become operational from November 2007 already, built by NAP - a JV between the Swedish LFV and the Canadian Airis.
Malmo Sturup Airport has seen cargo volumes rising steeply since the opening of the Oeresund Bridge that provides easy connection between the Danish capital region, and southern Sweden.
In 2006 the airport generated a total of 38,000 tonnes of cargo, and this will increase further to 60,000 tonnes by 2010, according to current estimates.
To prepare for this growth, a comprehensive masterplan has been worked out, detailing plans for a total of 30,000 sq m dedicated to air cargo activities, new terminals, new aircraft parking stands, and infrastructural projects including upgrading of the airport's aircraft landing systems.
