Jan 10, 2007 (newstodate): Ventspils International Airport, in Latvia, is now preparing the technical materials to seek EU investment for its modernisation project.
High on the agenda is a runway extension, adding 500 m to the current 1,300 m runway, which will enable the airport to acommodate regional turbo-prop aircraft and business jets.
-We are a small regional airport, and our aim is to provide the city of Ventspils with air traffic options to reach airports in the Baltic and Scandinavian regions for onward connections, says Arthurs Kokaras, Ventspils Airport manager.
-In the best case we could open a tender for construction of the extended runway by the end of this year, or early in 2008, and we plan to start construction work by 2008, aiming at completing the runway extension by late 2008 or early 2009.
-A tender will also comprise acquisition of airfield lighting eqipment, power supply and other infrastructure items.
