Jan 23, 2007 (newstodate): Erbil Howler Airport in Iraq's Kurdish region will be modernised.
The regional government has decided to invest some 300 million USD to upgrade the airport into a regional hub connecting Europe and Asia.
Comprised by the construction project is a new terminal capable of handling 2.7 million passengers annually, and slated to be completed by the end of October.
Also a new ATC tower will be built, planned to start operations from mid-2008, while construction of a 4,800m runway is entering the final stages.
Swedish airline Viking Airlines was the first European airline to offer scheduled servicdes to Erbil, followned after one year by Austrian Airlines.
Also serving Erbil is Royal Jordanian from Amman.
