Jan 17, 2007 (newstodate): In 2006, Yekaterinburg Koltsovo Airport in Russia's Sverdlovsk region saw its cargo and mail volumes up by 34.4 percent, to a total of 15,519 tonnes.
The steep increase must, however be seen against a drastic fall in volumes in 2005 when new customs duties were enforced.
10,313 tonnes were domestic cargo and mail, while international cargo aggregated to 4,858 tonnes, up 55.6 percent y-o-y.
546 tonnes were inter-CIS cargo, up 83.5 percent.
In January 2005, Sverdlovsk Koltsovo Airport was approved to become the region's largest airport hub, and work will start this year on Koltovos Airport's new runway.
